![]() What does any of this of have to do with parents? Voevodsky got in Harvard grad school without applying. Mazur dropped out of high school, then out of college, then out of grad school and is now emeriting at Harvard. ![]() The Princeton episode underscores the point that without parental involvement and wealth he would be nowhere near where he is now, all else equal in terms of IQ. Libz are increasingly destroying the advantages from both factors. Tao's nurture was due to (1) being born in a first world country (2) having education-obsessed parents. If your environment is the most important factor in dictating outcomes, seems only fair? Tao may be a fake w0kester, but there are those right now demanding that everyone receive the exact same level of math education. In any case, if you think that nurture is really that important, then you're really on the side of the DEI crowd. Young prodigies often undergo a "burn out" phase because they never got a chance to really let loose whereas late bloomers tend to be intensely focused and more motivated than their peers. He was a 16 year old graduate student and playing video games all day long and getting lost. In fact, if you read a little into his background you'll find out he nearly failed his generals at Princeton. It's true that Tao received incredible resources, but I don't think it was necessary. To become a good mathematician, it's required to receive a "ridiculous amount" of resources in your education? I think your view of nature/nurture is a little skewed. Unfortunately, judging by the vast majority of successful mathematicians (not to mention Fields medalists), the answer is Yes. The right question is not whether high IQ is required to become a good mathematician, but rather whether it’s required to grow up with academic upper-middle class parents who invest a ridiculous amount of resources in your education. One thing that really pisses me off is that Tao, who tried to be woke in what he says, actually ignores his own fortunate upbringing (or what other woke people would call “privileges”): His entire life was engineered by his highly educated and wealthy parents to lead to where he is now.
